REMONDIS acquires BVBA Vervoer Depoorter

In December of 2016, REMONDIS Belgien SPRL acquired BVBA Vervoer Depoorter. Located in Ostend, Depoorter is a family-owned company specialised in the areas of commercial recycling and container services. The acquisition of Depoorter is an important step forward for REMONDIS in Belgium: The company is a regional market leader in the area of commercial and industrial recycling. By acquiring Depoorter, REMONDIS will be able to significantly improve its regional footprint in the western part of Belgium.

Great potential for REMONDIS Depoorter in Belgium

REMONDIS has recognized the great potential of Depoorter: With a strong local footprint and its proven record of quality and reliability in the region, Depoorter has gradually built up a sustainable business model. In 2015 alone, Depoorter collected and processed around 80,000 tonnes of recyclables.

    Depoorter - A family company

Initially founded by Michael Depoorter in 1986, the company was further developed by the founders three sons. Depoorter has seen an impressive development over the past 30 years. The former owners of Depoorter will remain within the company and will play an important role in the company's future development. The primary objective going forward is to expand operations in the collection and treatment of commercial and mixed construction waste. Furthermore, REMONDIS Depoorter aims to increase the number of acquired public contracts in West Flanders.

Ostend, a tourist destination with great economic significance

A city of 70,000 inhabitants, Ostend is of great significance for the industrial sector in Belgium. Located in West Flanders, the city is in close proximity to the two international maritime ports of Ostend and Zeebrugge. These ports channel a large amount of the international goods in and out of Belgium, but also to other countries in the European Union. Furthermore, Flanders is a region of great business and industrial potential with growth rates regularly exceeding the national and European average.

    Contract signing and future management

Werner Hols, Managing Director of REMONDIS expressed his great pleasure with the conclusion of the Depoorter transaction, as he stated: “Thanks to its location and its well-developed infrastructure, Belgium is an important growth region within Western Europe and this is particularly true for the province of West Flanders. We are delighted with the acquisition of Depoorter as it will enable us to further promote innovative growth and help create a more sustainable economy in the Benelux countries.”

In order to ensure continuity whilst starting a new chapter for the company, the decision was made to appoint both a member of the Depoorter family and a REMONDIS professional to lead the company into the future. This is common practice at REMONDIS, as it ensures continuity. As a result, Stefaan Pillen and Mark Depoorter will assume the role of Managing Directors of Depoorter going forward.
