    Interview with Stefaan Pillen

Q: How did you initially come to REMONDIS?

A: I started straight from university. REMONDIS was advertising on a university board for announcements. A close relative of mine had worked in the industry previously. As a result, I had learned a lot about the sector in the past, and had developed a strong affinity for working in environmental services. After completing my studies, I decided to participate in the REMONDIS traineeship. I worked in several departments within the company, before I decided to join the team in Belgium as project manager for Flanders.

Q: What in particular attracted you to come work at REMONDIS?

A: I really like the company culture. The fact that at REMONDIS, you are given responsibility from day one. The "just do it" attitude. I like the fact that I am my own boss. I am given freedom, whilst being held accountable. It is a really great learning experience.

Q: You are now 26 years old, and Managing Director of REMONDIS Depoorter. What is you recipe for success?

A: You have to really want it. You have to be perseverant, and never back down. There are no simple solutions. You have to work hard. To work until the tasks are done, not until the clock says so. But work must also be fun. You have to enjoy what you do and really take your projects personally, to experience pleasure in seeing progress in your projects.

Q: What do you want to achieve with REMONDIS Depoorter?

A: I want to become a local market leader in the area of commercial recyclables. We are already a local leader in the area of container services. Furthermore, I would like to attain more synergies with REMONDIS Industrie Service and Buchen. I think there are many new ideas and concepts to be developed. And finally, I think there are more public services in the region that we could provide for. That will also be a challenge for us.

Q: What future to you see for REMONDIS in Belgium overall?

A: I think there are more opportunities both in terms of further acquisition and organic growth for us in Belgium. Particularly in the household recyclable collection we can do a lot more. But we also need to use REMONDIS' real competitive advantage going forward: the company is a problem solver. There is almost no services in the area of the environment that we are not able to provide. If a client needs a particular service, we make sure to provide it, period. That's our main strength.
