Highest quality of resources: REMONDIS recycles coffee capsules

The amount of coffee consumed in the world is growing with every year, and coffee capsules are increasingly gaining in popularity as the preferred method of preparation. REMONDIS in the Netherlands has developed a truly unique recycling technique for coffee capsules in Europe. Our processing center in the Lichtenvoorde recycles coffee capsules for the Netherlands, but also for the Benelux states and France. Coffee capsules contain valuable materials that REMONDIS is able to extract and reintroduce into the materials lifecycle. This is REMONDIS’ very own contribution to protecting our environment.

State of the art in coffee capsule recycling

REMONDIS Dusseldorp collects coffee capsules from different stores in the Netherlands, but also from various collection points in the Benelux countries and France. The central collection of capsules allows for very efficient logistical processing, sparing fuel and other vital resources, and thereby protecting the environment.

Thereafter, the capsules are transferred to our processing plant in Lichtenvoorde in the Netherlands in order to be processed. Our recycling facility in the Netherlands was specifically designed for the recycling of coffee capsules, allowing for the highest performance in material recovery.

    Drained coffee as fertilizer

REMONDIS has developed an innovative solution to make use of spent coffee grounds. These are introduced into a digester at the ARN composting facility, a plant co-operated by REMONDIS in the Netherlands.

As a result, the material is transformed into compost, but it also provides for important biogas and CO2 fertilizer. The composting of coffee grounds allows to create a fully circular lifecycle for coffee capsules.

The recycling of alumimium requires 95% less energy than to produce it from ore

REMONDIS' coffee capsule processing plant in the Netherlands is a state of the art facility for the recycling of the different components withheld in a coffee capsule. First of all, REMONDIS is able to recover valuable aluminum from the capsule's external hull. Aluminum is one of the most important industrial raw materials. The design of coffee capsules is ideal for recycling. Both the capsule and its lid are made of aluminum. This makes the recycling process extremely straightforward for REMONDIS. The extracted aluminum parts are compacted or melted down and subsequently sent to the providers of aluminum processing services.
