REMONDIS Aqua is growing steadily in India

REMONDIS Aqua has been working to provide India with safe water since 2011. The company’s presence in India is growing fast, with more commercial and industrial clients, a larger regional footprint and a higher amount of employees with every year. Thomas Block, Managing Director of REMONDIS Aqua International has been leading the effort to provide India with clean, safe and accessible water.

India’s industry has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to the protection of water resources. There is a significant backlog of investments in India: Financial resources for new equipment, maintenance or staff training measures are scarcely available. India is experiencing significant economic growth: The country’s industry is developing fast, and living standards are improving rapidely.

The “Clean Ganga Mission” is a project to improve the water quality in the Ganges, a 2500 km-long river on the Indian subcontinent.

This economic progress however, is also putting an important strain on the country’s natural resources: It is considered that five to ten percent of the country’s demand for water is now accounted for by India’s booming industry. As a result, more than six billion litres of untreated wastewater flow into the country’s countless rivers and lakes. To attend to this important problem, the Indian government is continuously looking for solutions to improve the quality of the water running through India’s vast network of waterways.

Indian government sets eyes on German expertise

The Indian government has pledged to act decisively in the area of water protection. Therefore, in a first step it will be illegal for the industry, but also for entire cities and villages to discharge untreated wastewater into the river Ganges. Furthermore, the technology and infrastructure for water treatment is already prevalent in India today. Yet this infrastructure is often insufficiently maintained, or simply incorrectly operated.

In order to improve the country’s performance when it comes to the treatment of wastewater, India has set eyes on the knowledge prevalent in the German environmental sector. Germany has one of the most advanced water management sectors in the world. And REMONDIS Aqua is one of its leading actors.
