Saransk is Russia’s recycling champion – with REMONDIS’ help

Greenpeace Russia recently conducted an important nationwide environmental assessment in the area of recycling for the entire territory of the Russian Federation. The study aimed to assess the state of recycling activities in Russia’s most populous cities. Greenpeace then classified these cities according to their respective performances in the area of environmental services. Focusing on cities with more than 150.000 inhabitants, the study evaluated these municipalities according to their performances with separate collection systems for recyclables. The study conducted its analysis in close to 160 cities across the entire Russian Federation.

The Study - Saransk tops the list on seperate collection

The evaluation found the City of Saransk to be Russia’s most competent city when it comes to the separate collection of recyclables. It estimated the separate collection rate of recyclables to be close to 80% in Saransk. Saransk is the capital city of the Region of Mordovia. The collection, segregation and treatment of waste for the City of Saransk is operated by REMONDIS. For many years, REMONDIS has worked hard to develop a recycling management concept adapted to the needs, regional and geographical particularities of the Russian Federation.

Winning minds just as important as building new infrastructure

Most importantly, REMONDIS was able to raise awareness for recycling itself. Swetlana Bigesse, Managing Director of OOO REMONDIS has been leading the effort to modernise the recycling infrastructure in the City of Saransk. Mrs Bigesse has been very proactive in order to raise awareness about the necessity to find a long-term solution in order to reduce the amount of refuse discharged in the surrounding environment. She has been advertising the advantages of waste segregation and keeping Saransk a clean city.

To achieve this, Mrs Bigesse has been targeting the younger generation of Saransk in particular, as it is easier to induce change by convincing the younger generation to work for a cleaner and healthier future. Mrs Bigesse has spoken at schools and universities, advertising the benefits of recycling. She has also created a multimedia platform, and advertises the benefits of recycling on local television channels. REMONDIS is very pleased with Saransk's great performance in Greenpeace Russia’s environmental ranking. Our company is looking forward to developing more projects with the authorities and the citizens of Saransk in the near future.
