A revolution for Lake Macquarie’s organic waste management

In March 2017, REMONDIS officially started with the construction of a state of the art processing plant for organic refuse. The new facility will be built in the town of Awaba, in Lake Macquarie, New South Wales (NSW). Once completed, the facility will be equipped to treat more than 40,000 tonnes of organic materials every year. The plant will mainly take in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO). REMONDIS Australia unveiled the new project to the general public in late May.

At the project’s official presentation, Luke Agati, CEO of REMONDIS Australia and Mayor Kay Fraser turned the first sod, using a spade supplied by the City Council. Upon inaugurating the new project Mayor Fraser stated: “Today’s ceremony marks a ground-breaking day in more ways than one. Members of the City Council, representatives of the NSW Environment Protection Agency were also present at the project’s official presentation.

Significant improvement to Lake Macquarie’s organic recycling

Once completed, the new plant will be the first in the Hunter Region to provide for both the collection and treatment of organic refuse. REMONDIS’ new facility will produce high-quality compost. It will provide a great alternative to the current practice of landfilling organic materials. Instead of decomposing in landfill, the high quality compost will be used in gardens, parks or in agriculture in the Hunter Region.

In addition to the obvious environmental advantages, the facility is also expected to improve the economic efficiency of environmental services in Lake Macquarie.

The new plant will serve as an important catalyst for change

REMONDIS’ new processing facility will improve Lake Macquarie’s organic recycling performance from 2018 onwards. Once completed, the plant will help to significantly reduce the amount of organic refuse that goes to landfill every year.

Mayor Fraser hopes that REMONDIS’ new facility “will also revolutionise the way people think about the disposal of household waste”. REMONDIS’ Luke Agati promised that in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the new facility will contribute to job creation and create new economic opportunities for the local community.
