Delegation of German entrepreneurs visits Belarus under REMONDIS’ leadership

From 31 May to 2 June 2017, a delegation of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (OA) visited Belarus. In the course of a three-day visit, the delegation had the opportunity to meet with high-ranking representatives in Minsk. The bilateral consultations between German and Belarussian entrepreneurs were officially launched by the right honorable Wladimir Makej, Foreign Minister for the Republic of Belarus. The official delegation travelled to Minsk under the leadership of Egbert Tölle, Member of the Executive Board at REMONDIS and official Spokesperson of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations on issues related to Belarus.

Long standing partnership between REMONDIS and Belarus

REMONDIS has maintained a very successful partnership with Belarus, and particularly with the City of Minsk for many years. Egbert Tölle, Member of the Executive Board at REMONDIS and official Spokesperson for Belarus in the OA had discerned the many advantages of investing in Belarus over seven years ago. Ever since, REMONDIS has been at the service of Belarusian citizens in the area of environmental services. Our company was therefore particularly qualified and prepared to lead such an important delegation in its meetings with Belarussian counterparts.

German-Belarusian Business Council meets for the first time

On 1 June 2017, the German-Belarusian Business Council held its first official session of bilateral talks. During the course of the meeting, entrepreneurs from both Germany and Belarus were given an opportunity to lay out their visions and expectations with respect to the Council’s role. The objective for the newly formed entity is clear: The Council will work to encourage an active exchange between companies from both countries. It will help to remove potential obstacles to bilateral cooperation and will act as an intermediary between political and economic realms.

The ultimate objective of the Business Council is to reduce existing restrictions and limitations hampering bilateral trade and to improve the conditions for German entrepreneurs in order to establish their businesses in Belarus, and vice-versa. In his opening remarks to the business council, Egbert Tölle expressed his great pleasure over the establishment of an intensive bilateral cooperation: "The German-Belarussian Business Council will ensure that an active exchange between companies from Belarus and Germany takes place. Furthermore the Council will contribute to the creation of economic contacts between companies from both countries.”

Going forward, the German-Belarussian Business Council will operate under the leadership of two official co-chairmen: Sergej Nowitskij will represent the interests of Belarussian entrepreneurs in the bilateral Business Council, while Felix Zimmerman, Director for Public Affairs in Eastern Europe at REMONDIS will represent those of their German counterparts.

A practical approach to economic exchange

In the course of their visit, business representatives were given the opportunity to meet with high-ranking representatives of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Economics and the National Agency of Investment and Privatisation. Going further, members of the delegation were given extensive tours of the both the International Airport in Minsk and the industrial park “Great Stone”.

The OA delegation travelled to Belarus, under the organisational leadership of REMONDIS. The group was composed of entrepreneurs from various business sectors and industrial activities. While some of the participants had already a business set up in Belarus, others were visiting Minsk for the first time.

Belarus growing in popularity amongst foreign investors

Going further, Egbert Tölle emphasized on the potential of Belarus for the German industry. He stated:

“The Republic of Belarus is only a one-hour flight away from Berlin and offers great opportunities in the areas of trade and industry. Its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia makes it particularly attractive to foreign investors. The high turnout of German entrepreneurs that travelled to Belarus as part of the official delegation underpins the attractiveness of this location.”

An important bridge between Europe and Asia

The strategic economic importance of German-Belarussian relations was repeatedly emphasized in the course of the delegation’s official visit. Michael Harms, Chairman of German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations, emphasised on the important role of Belarus in international Trade, being a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

By the means of an enhanced bilateral partnership with Belarus, German investors could make use of the country’s access to the EEU as a bridge to the markets in both Russia and Central Asia.
