Dear reader,

Our group has come a long way since its establishment. The past few years have seen REMONDIS, part of the RETHMANN Group, grow in leaps and bounds in terms of the breadth and depth of our portfolio. Even though REMONDIS now employs 36 000 people in a variety of different areas, the bonds of connection woven between our businesses and employees have been and will continue to be the secret of our success. In this newsletter, we would like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the latest developments and a number of interesting projects within the RETHMANN Group and to underscore the importance of working together for every member of the entire RETHMANN Group (REMONDIS, Rhenus, SARIA, 34% Transdev).

It is critical that we engage in meaningful dialogue and learn from one another across our different divisions and geographical areas. Forging these close connections allows us to create additional value for our group and our customers. We would like to encourage our employees to build relationships with other employees and other branches with the mission of creating an even stronger RETHMANN Group today – and tomorrow.

Happy reading!

REMONDIS in Germany

Meeting one another and sharing customer contacts in the south-west of Germany

During a trip, managers from REMONDIS, Rhenus and Transdev (regional director south Horst Windeisen) took the opportunity to showcase the three companies' activities in the south-west region of Germany to one another. As part of the event, they visited the bus transportation firm PalatinaBus - which is part of Transdev - in Edenkoben, Rhineland-Palatinate. The managers next called on the regional headquarters of REMONDIS Südwest (managing director Thomas Drewer). Attendees then stopped by the Rhenus Group's activities in the port of Mannheim where it provides all of the logistics services. The exchange of ideas and information was most definitely a win-win situation for everyone involved!

Reunion in the north of Germany

This time around, managers from Transdev (regional director north André Tonne) and REMONDIS Nord (managing director Erwin Braatz) from the northern part of Germany set out on a joint trip to a number of Transdev and REMONDIS locations and activities in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Participants shared experiences with one another during their visits to a branch of REMONDIS Seenplatte GmbH (managing director Helmut Seeger) and a bus firm and customer service centre operated by Transdev GmbH in Neubrandenburg in the Mecklenburg Lake District.

Using the patented REMONDIS TetraPhos® technology, the plant will extract 7 000 tonnes of our high-purity phosphoric acid product, RePacid®, from around 20 000 tonnes of sewage sludge ash each year once it starts operating in 2020.

REMONDIS invests in the future

The REMONDIS Group opened its state-of-the-art construction and demolition (C&D) recycling plant in Chester-le-Street, County Durham at the start of June 2019. The site will utilise the latest sorting technology to process construction, demolition and commercial waste streams with the goal of improving REMONDIS’ market-leading recycling and recovery rates. REMONDIS’ customers can rest assured that their waste is being utilised as a resource wherever possible.

Innovative coffee capsule recycling with Nespresso

REMONDIS and Nespresso are delivering exemplary recycling of coffee capsules. Irmgard Rethmann, Norbert Rethmann, Honorary Chairman of the RETHMANN Supervisory Board, and Heinrich Zölzer, retired member of the RETHMANN Supervisory Board, were able to see the fruits of this partnership first-hand when they stopped by REMONDIS' site in Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands with a delegation. REMONDIS operates a recycling line in Lichtenvoorde that separates aluminium from coffee capsules from coffee grounds. As this extracted lightweight metal has high purity, it can be compacted or melted down and then sent straight to aluminium-processing businesses. Coffee grounds can also be recovered to generate biogas, make compost and provide CO2 fertiliser.

New acquisition in Zuid-Holland

The REMONDIS Group continues to grow – including in the Netherlands. REMONDIS’ acquisition of its industry partner Rijnmond Milieu B.V. in Oud-Beijerland in the Netherlands at the start of 2019 will help to strengthen our foothold in the Zuid-Holland region. Rijnmond Milieu specialises in collecting industrial waste, paper and other material streams throughout the Zuid-Holland province from the Rotterdam Rijnmond region.

REMONDIS in India

Saving every drop in India

REMONDIS is also expanding its water business in India where REMONDIS Aqua offers zero liquid discharge (ZLD). In the ZLD concept, water is used in the manufacturing process before being treated and recycled so that it can ultimately be returned to production as treated process water. In 2016, REMONDIS Aqua successfully implemented a ZLD project with Polyplastics in Bhiwadi (above left). Another ZLD plant at the new Polyplastics site in Gujarat, which is also being built and operated by REMONDIS, is already in the construction phase. The speciality chemicals group Evonik also recently awarded REMONDIS a contract to build and operate a new ZLD plant at its site in Dombivli, around 40 km north-east of Mumbai. In 2018, REMONDIS installed the first fully automated ZLD plant for the fragrance and beauty product manufacturer Givaudan (above right).
