New composting facility for Lake Macquarie

In 2012, Remondis was awarded with a contract to Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) a food and garden organics facility in Lake Macquarie. Located on the north cost of New South Wales this new facility will deliver a state of the art hybrid invessel tunnel and windrow composting facility, with a total throughput capacity of approximately 44,000 tonnes per annum.

    Lake Macquarie Organics Processing Facility

    Organic material will be supplied by Lake Macquarie City Council’s kerbside organics collection service, comprising green and food refuse materials. Self-hauled organic waste will also be processed at the facility.

    The processing plant will be located adjacent to the existing Awaba Waste Management Facility and will future-proof Council's organics processing needs, taking into consideration population growth and the popularity of the new kerbside food collection service.

    Show case to the Australian compost industry.

    The facility will be a show case to the Australian compost industry. Currently, REMONDIS receives green waste from the council kerbside collection and is already supplying organic compost to local broad acre and orchard farmers, landscapers, horse studs, councils and the mining industry for rehabilitation, dust suppression and agricultural use.

    The new service will produce a higher quality and nutrient rich compost that will be used to further improve the dry soils in the local region and broader Australia.

    REMONDIS has produced compost in the region for more than 15 years in Port Macquarie (250km North of Lake Macquarie), assisting farmers to improve the fertility of their soils and increase crop yields.

    The Lake Macquarie facility is scheduled for commissioning in early to mid 2018. REMONDIS is currently progressing the approval processes to increase the capacity of the site to meet the waste processing requirements of the region and to meet increasing demand for compost products.
